Sunrise Commitment

In a daring, hungry and weak moment, right out of dreams or not yet having slept, we meet.

From April 17 2017 to April 16 2018 I told myself I would watch the sun rise every day; I called this decision the Sunrise Commitment. Sunrise Commitment invites an audience to wake up and come together one hour before the sun is set to cross the horizon. We gather outside with tea and blankets, check our heartbeats and, bathing in the uncertain light of morning, gaze towards the horizon. In the distance, two dancers and the star of the dawn meet each other in successive waves. Somewhere on the wind, musicians play their own ode to the dawn.

This is a commitment to commitment, a practice of what that can mean: to wake up for each other, orientating ourselves in the morning light towards a landscape that, through layers of depth and simultaneity, draws us out into different forms of centre. It's a piece for joy and exhaustion, for the approach and the retreat.
Sunrise Commitment is the result of a year of daily sunrise contemplation and is documented in the self-published book O.

The day begins in darkness
The day begins in the night
In the night, before light
Between the hour of the Star
And the dawn before the Sun
